Professional Summary

Dr. Chen’s primary research interest is perinatal and pediatric environmental epidemiology, studying chemical exposures and adverse pregnancy outcomes, child neurodevelopment, obesity and metabolic disorders. He has conducted epidemiologic research on DDT, isoflavones, lead, mercury, cadmium, tobacco smoke, flame retardants, perfluoroalkyl substances, particulate matter, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. He also has research interest in child health risk reduction through exposure mitigation and (parental) behavior modification since prenatal period. His research projects involved epidemiologic analyses of US Collaborative Perinatal Project (1959-1974), National Maternal and Infant Health Survey (1988), Treatment of Lead-exposed Children Study (TLC, 1994-2004), National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), and national and state vital statistics data. With funding from NIH/NIEHS, he investigated mixture exposure to toxicants from informal electronic waste recycling in developing countries for adverse impact on children's health and exposure mitigation. In other NIH/NIEHS funded projects, he examined developmental neurotoxicity of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and replacement flame retardants on thyroid hormone disruption, cognitive function, and child behavior using Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study, a prospective birth cohort in Cincinnati, OH (ongoing since 2001). He currently serves as Deputy Director of NIH/NIEHS funded UC Center for Environmental Genetics (CEG).
