Richard J. Paul , PhD

Professional Summary

Research: Control of smooth muscle contractility and its coordination with metabolism.
Teaching:  Muscle Mechanics, Metabolism & Energetics, &  Thermodynamics in Biological Systems.
Service:  Director, Systems Biology and Physiology PhD Program.  University and COM Graduate Committees, MCP ARPT, AAUP Treasurer.

Education

PhD: Harvard University Cambridge, MA, 1973 (Biophysics)

Research and Practice Interests

My research interests focus on the mechanisms underlying the control of smooth muscle contractility and its coordination with metabolism. We use gene-altered mice, opening new avenues for studying basic smooth muscle mechanisms and diseases from coronary artery vasospasm to hypertension.

Professional Affiliation

Maintenance of my national recognition and visibility in terms of research is key to funding my research program. To this end, my approval by my peers as shown by reappointment to Am J Physiol. Cell and appointment to Frontiers in Vascular Physiology (2010-) Editorial Boards, my EB2009 Symposium and invited presentation at recent Keystone Symposium is encouraging.
