Research and Practice Interests

Dr. Aggarwal’s research program addresses issues of inequity, exclusion, and lack of representation within academia and more broadly in the mental health field. Much of the literature in psychology continues to originate from societies characterized as Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD). Not only do these communities substantially differ from non-WEIRD populations on important psychological constructs, but immense variability exists within these communities. Using cultural and cross-cultural research, Dr. Aggarwal aims to address these issues in her work.

Dr. Aggarwal’s first line of research examines the relevance of theoretical frameworks (e.g., ADDRESSING model, Interpersonal Theory of Suicide), clinical instruments (e.g., RQI, QRI), diagnostic systems (e.g., DSM-V, ICD-10), and treatment modalities (e.g., CBT, DBT) originating in the West for their applicability in other parts of the world. As her second line of research, Dr. Aggarwal studies the current challenges in educational and training programs in health service psychology, particularly from the perspectives of individuals with historically marginalized identities. Moving forward, Dr. Aggarwal plans to develop mentoring and supervision programs for psychologists holding marginalized backgrounds to better facilitate culturally informed discussions on identity, associated privilege or lack thereof, worldviews, and values across personal and professional realms.
