Personal Statement
I moved to the US in 2010 and began to be exposed to American culture and language in middle school. It was at this point that I also fell in love with the field of biology and medicine. I have spent the last three years learning and becoming familiar with the language and world of medicine. Over time, I realized that language involves a community's culture, mindset, beliefs, history, and creativity. While tutoring at the University of Akron, I was also a part of the AHEC Scholars Program, where I participated in poverty simulations, held preventative health discussions with senior residents in assisted living facilities, and learned about the impact of social determinants and how an unwillingness to appreciate the context of a patient's story, culture and community can affect their health and especially of those who come from a different background than myself. These experiences helped me realize that, while I might understand the language of medicine and the human body, that understanding only becomes effective when I endeavor to understand my patient's world and how it influences their health. It is this exchange of language that excites me about the profession of internal medicine.
