Personal Statement
Looking back on my aspiration to become a physician, I find that living with and caring for my aunt, who had suffered a traumatic brain injury, provided the strongest motivation. Growing up in a household that supported her through medical and social challenges, I grew to appreciate the humanity of medicine that extends beyond prescriptions and lab tests and focuses on the individual being treated. These struggles are what informed my curiosity in viewing "medicine as a science of people" beyond "medicine as a science.”
Why I Chose Cincinnati
The intentionality with which the University of Cincinnati’s Internal Medicine program approaches resident training initially caught my attention while exploring programs. But it was during my interview day, speaking with Dr. Warm about the program’s emphasis on a growth mindset, that I had the gut-feeling this was the right place for me. Although I didn’t share it at the time, our conversation deeply resonated with me because just five days earlier, I had gotten a much-contemplated tattoo symbolizing the importance of stepping outside of one’s comfort zone and embracing challenges in order to grow as a person—a lesson I learned in medical school and one I intend to carry with me through residency and beyond. I recognized then that this program’s values embodied the kind of environment that would challenge me and foster my growth into the physician I aspire to be
