Marshall W. Anderson

Marshall Anderson, Professor of Cancer and Cell Biology, has a background in mathematics, biometrics, and molecular toxicology. He came to the University of Cincinnati in 1996 as Director of the Department of Environmental Health and joined the Department of Genome Science, now Molecular Oncogenesis in 2004. Dr. Anderson has led many large multi-site studies on the genetics, etiology, and prevention of lung cancer. A recent study by Dr. Anderson's group identified a major susceptibility locus for familial lung cancer. A second area of scientific interest for the Anderson laboratory is the development of chemopreventive strategies to reduce the incidence of lung cancer in high-risk current and former smokers. His group is in the process of examining combinations of agents in several animal models to help develop a strategy for human trials. In particular, they are targeting the AP-1 and NK-kB pathways because of evidence suggesting that these pathways are activated in preneoplastic lesions in the bronchial epithelium.
