Blankenship is a graduate of Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. He began his association with CCM with the Hot Summer Nights productions in the late 1980’s. He started his career in Cincinnati as an intern at the Playhouse in the Park in 1986, and became the full-time assistant scenic artist in 1987, working in that capacity until 1991, and frequently stepping into the charge position for many productions.
Blankenship also was affiliated for many years with the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati, working as an actor, scenic artist, scenic designer and finally as artistic associate, with the development of “Off Center Onstage,” a second series of productions geared towards the training of young artists, primarily employing the theatre’s intern company. In 1994, Blankenship joined the staff at CCM as resident scenic artist.
In addition to his painting and sculpting for theatrical productions, Blankenship has painted several pieces of monumental and architectural art in the area. He designed and executed the faux marble façade of the Ensemble Theatre on Vine Street (1992-2012), and in 2007 he participated in the Artworks organization’s MuralWorks program for training young artists, designing and supervising the execution of a giant mural on Central Parkway, reproducing a century-old photo of workers on the old Miami and Erie Canal.
At CCM, Blankenship is responsible for instructing and supervising the daily operation of the Paint Shop, providing the specific look for each production in Drama, Opera and Musical Theatre. He also teaches Scenic Drawing, Scenic Art 1, Scenic Crafts and Painting Styles.
