Research and Practice Interests

My current research objectives are to understand mechanisms of cellular differentiation and of gene product synthesis and translocation. I am using the pigment cell (melanocyte) of the skin and the eye as my model system. This cell embryonically originates from the neural crest and appears to undergo commitment to subpopulations prior to neural tube emigration. In the skin and the eye, the melanocyte specific gene product is melanin which is packaged into a cellular organelle, the melanosome.I am analyzing melanocyte aberrations which cause hypermelanosis and hypomelanosis in vitiligo and albinism respectively. These mutations affect the transcriptional, translational, and translocational events in the cells. In turn, normal cellular processes responsible for pigment cell function are addressed.
