Professional Summary

Dr. Joyce Chan Grabell is the director of CCM Suzuki Strings program and is the lead teacher in CCM Prep’s partnership with Cincinnati Public Schools’ string programs.  Dr. Grabell received her Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Viola Performance from the CCM, with an additional focus on music theory. She also received her Bachelor and Masters degree from New York University, where she also served as adjunct instructor of violin and viola.  Her primary viola studies have been with Catharine Carroll Lees, Karen Ritscher, Martha Strongin Katz, and Stephanie Baer.  Grabell’s research interests focuses on the pedagogy of string playing and her journal article “Forward Motion: Teaching Phrasing Using Marcel Tabuteau’s Number System” won first place in the Dalton Viola Research Competition and appeared in the Journal of the American Viola Society. In addition, she was awarded the Strings Magazine Award for her commitment towards string music education. Dr. Grabell has served as clinician, adjudicator, and masterclass teacher for many local programs, and was selected to teach in the American Viola Society’s Young Professionals Masterclass series.  Her students have won awards in many competitions including American Viola Society, Wendell Irish Viola Award, Julia Bartels Concerto Competition, and the Clifton Clef Club Competition, and can be seen performing with the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra, Cincinnati Junior Strings, and OMEA Region and All-State Orchestras.
