Professional Summary

Phil DeGreg studied with Dan Haerle, John Elliot, Jim McNeely and Kenny Werner; he also toured one year with the Woody Herman Orchestra. As a leader, he has recorded 10 CDs and has performed on many others as a sideman. He appeared on the Live in Concert video with J. J. Johnson. He has been the weekend house pianist for the Blue Wisp Jazz Club in Cincinnati for 15 years and has accompanied Slide Hampton, Carl Fontana, Joe Lovano, Bobby Shew, Junior Cook, Gene Bertoncini, Mark Murphy, Billy Hart, Stanley Turrentine, Lew Tabackin, Red Holloway and Richie Cole, among many others.

Since 1982, DeGreg has been staff member at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops, and teaches annually at the Miami Valley Jazz Camp and the Jazzwise Summer Jazz Workshop in London, UK. He has presented lectures for the International Association of Jazz Educators, Ohio Music Educators Association and Music Teachers National Association. DeGreg has taught and performed in the United Kingdom, Brazil, Germany, Costa Rica, Finland, Switzerland, Guatemala, France and Denmark.

He is the author of Jazz Keyboard Harmony, a text for non-pianists, and is published in Jazz Player Magazine. He has been awarded two National Endowment for the Arts grants for jazz piano research and recently was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to lecture in Brazil. He was recipient of two Cincinnati Enquirer 'Cammy' awards (1996, 1999), and was a finalist at the Great American Piano Competition (1995) and Jazziz Magazine's Keyboards on Fire Competition (1995).
