Professional Summary
Professor Heathcott spends a lot of his time thinking about cities! He is fascinated by the diverse cultures, institutions, and environments that comprise our urban world from the local to the global scale. His research and teaching interests include: cities real and imagined; urban spatial production; history and theory of architecture, landscape, and built environment; race, class, and urban planning; and the politics of heritage conservation. He is particularly interested in cities as living archives of creativity, urbanity, and design. He has conducted research in the U.S., France, Mexico, Morocco, Turkey, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Currently serving as Associate Dean for Research at DAAP, Heathcott is also a Professor of Architecture and Planning as well as Professor Emeritus at The New School in New York, where he taught for 19 years. His work has appeared in a wide range of venues, from books and scholarly journals to exhibits, blogs, juried art shows, magazines, and journals of opinion. He has been invited to lecture, consult, and judge design reviews in many venues both in the U.S. and internationally.
Heathcott frequently volunteers his time with neighborhood groups and community organizations around issues of planning, preservation, and urban design. He served on the Board of Directors of the Center for Urban Pedagogy and the Urban History Association, and as President of the Society for American City and Regional Planning History. He has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Planning Association, and on the editorial boards of the Journal of the Society for Architectural Historians, Planning Perspectives, and the International Journal of Architectural Education.
