Personal Statement
While serving with AmeriCorps after my first year of medical school, I met a pregnant woman with multiple medical risk factors in her third trimester. She had insufficient prenatal care, Unfortunately, there were no local obstetricians who accepted her Medicaid plan. This situation made it such that there was no feasible way for her to access prenatal care, even though Medicaid should fully cover the visits. Determined to help, I reached out to advocate for this expectant mother to receive the medical care she needed. We were able to help her transition to another Medicaid plan that better suited her new living situation and were able to set her up with a local obstetrician. This experience brought me greater insight into the challenges our patients face in accessing care, inspiring me to advocate more strongly for improved access to healthcare.

Why I Chose Cincinnati
I chose Cincinnati for my internal medicine residency training for a number of reasons including its unique training, people (including leadership), location, and quality of nearby pediatrics programs for my partner who I couples matched with. First, the ambulatory long block offers a unique approach to outpatient training in residency that I value as someone who is considering multiple career paths in internal medicine. The people were another incredibly important factor - I truly felt at socials and during interviews that I could be friends as well as coworkers with those who I met. Dr. Warm also stood out as the most thorough and invested program director who I interviewed with, as the questions he asked reflected the degree of depth with which he reviewed my application. My partner and I have visited Cincinnati on a few occasions as it was close to our medical school in Indianapolis, and we fell in love with the city and all it has to offer. Its proximity to our families in Indiana mean that our support systems will be close by when we need them! Finally, Cincinnati Children’s offers world-class training in pediatrics for my partner, and the chief residents in both programs were thrilled to help coordinate our schedules.
