Professional Summary

I have gained considerable experience as an emergency nurse since I started in the emergency department (ED) in 2001. Although I love the fast-paced nature of the ED, I have experienced times of frustration when I felt that I have not provided high-quality care to patients in the ED. I needed to better understand and address issues that would compromise care in the ED, especially during the triage process. I sought out doctoral education and postdoctoral training in order to focus on improving the quality and safety of care for patients seeking treatment in the Emergency Department. This has enabled me to begin a promising career researching the impact of interruptions on ED patients. My research focus has the potential to greatly improve the care of ED patients and possibly improve patient outcomes.

Education

PhD: Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University Cleveland, Ohio, 2011 (Nursing Research)

BSN: Youngstown State University Youngstown, OH, 1999 (Acute Care Nursing)

Research and Practice Interests

Improving the quality and safety of patient care in the emergency department. Current research focuses on

  • determining the impact of interruptions in patient care during triage and the initial physician's evaluation in the emergency department.
  • determining quality metrics addressed by patients in online reviews.
  • developing interventions to mitigate and manage interruptions in the emergency department and triage areas. With an additional focus of teaching these techniques to nursing students.
