My research and expertise includes state of the art neuroanatomical tract tracing techniques, including horseradish peroxidase, fluorescent double labeling, fluorescence histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry are applied to studies examining sensory pathways associated with cranial nerves. Specific areas of clinical interest include facial neuralgias as well as atypical neuralgias with primary interest in trigeminal neuralgia. Another area of interest involves investigations of somatic-autonomic mechanisms of neuronal integration. Specifically, we are examining trigeminovascular fibers and their relationship/interaction with sympathetic nerve fibers and mast cells in the dura mater. These relationships are of particular interest with regard to vascularheadache and cephalalgia. Basic research techniques are applied to problems confronting clinical neurosurgery. These clinical problems are studied in order to better understand the disease process with the ultimate goal being more effective treatment.
