Professional Summary

Barry Kew is a Professor | Educator in the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP School of Planning.  As an educator and licensed landscape architect for more than 25 years, he has extensive experience in urban design with national and international award-winning projects.  He brings to the studio an in-depth understanding of built works.  His research focus is urban ecology and its reaction to landscape change and also has interests in studio pedagogy and construction methods and materials.   As a studio lead in the MLA program, his studios focus on sustainable sites planning and design with emphasis on detail resolution through qualitative and quantitative ideation and assessment.

Process oriented, he continues to be intrigued by the connectivity within a series of actions that combine in making a product, an activity or a thought. His valuing and respect of the landscape began in his youth through the many camping, hunting, or hiking trips taken in the Ouachita Mountains. When not in the studio or classroom, he is likely outdoors, reading the water, helping determine a presentation for fresh water angling. Project oriented and with a love of craft, he spends much of his time building or repairing simple things related to carpentry, mechanics or gardening. He loves to cook, and favorite meals begin with his harvest from the garden, the water or from the field – ask his students about his smoked salmon dip or venison andouille gumbo.
