Professional Summary

Sohaib Khan, Professor of Cancer and Cell Biology, completed his undergraduate and graduate training at Aligarh University in India and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Tal Institute in Bombay. He was a research scientist at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute and at Case Western Reserve University. He joined the University of Cincinnati as a faculty member in 1982. The Khan laboratory is studying the mechanism involved in estrogen-induced cell differentiation and apoptosis of normal and malignant target tissues such as breast and uterus. They have shown that estrogen functions through its receptor by activating early response protooncogenes. The group utilizes molecular biological, yeast genetic and transgenic technologies to decipher the mechanism of estrogen receptor action with the hope of understanding breast and endometrial cancer.

Education

Bachelor's Degree: Aligarh University 1961 (Chemistry, Biology )

Master's Degree: Aligarh University 1969 (Biochemistry )

Doctoral Degree: Aligarh University 1974 (Biochemistry )

Post-Doctoral Degree: Tata Institute of Fundamental Research 1975 (Molecular Biology)

Research and Practice Interests

1) To understand the mechanism by which cells control the level of cholesterol in the body, we are studying the transcriptional regulation of the rat HMG-CoA reductase (HMGR) gene. HMGR is the rate limiting enzyme of cellular cholesterol synthesis. 2) Inthe second project, we are studying the role insulin plays in the regulation of glycogen phosphorylase gene. 3) In the other project underway, we are studying the role oncogenes play in cell differentiation.
