Research and Practice Interests

For the past 45 years I have written about the issues associated with development of language/communication in children who are deaf. More recently, I have been interested and researched the effects of mild conductive hearing loss on children's classroom communication and learning abilities. Most of this writing has been done with my husband, Richard R. Kretschmer. Additionally, we have been interested in the application of qualitative research to problems of communication and learning in special needs children, especially the use of videotaped microethnographies to examine parent-child, teacher-child and child to child interactions. This latter research has been carried out by doctoral students in Special Education and Speech Pathology/Audiology at the University of Cincinnati under our direction, or committee participation. Further areas of i research has been on the effects of the interaction of chemicals, especially solvents, and noise on hearing of workers in industries where such exposures are common.  Most recently I have been involved in the Fetch Lab, especially with hearing and vocal behavior of animals, particularly dogs, rhinos and otters. Fetch Lab has been working on noise abatement in dog kennels, and measurement of noise in aquaria.
