Personal Statement
The potpourri of clinical scenarios an internist sees fancies my liking and makes me grow fond of this branch of medicine. A four-week rotation at a primary care hospital in Ibri, Oman, deepened my understanding of the internist's role, which extends far beyond traditional medical tasks. On my first day, an attending physician told me, "Here, every patient is like family; know them well, care for them fully." This was evident in how the staff began each day by helping patients with breakfast and ended it by ensuring they were warm and comfortable in their blankets. It was not just about medicine but about kindness and care in the simplest forms. I hope to carry this approach into my practice, asking each patient I clerk, "Have you eaten and slept well?" like I would ask a family member staying home.
Why I Chose Cincinnati
Residency is a two-way street. After my interview at UCMC, what stayed with me the most was how much Dr. Warm and the entire team care about their residents, not just as trainees but as people. The time, energy, and thought they put into shaping this program felt different. Everyone I met seemed to carry this quiet determination to grow, and to help others grow too. That atmosphere felt right to me. During my interview, I called it a “jello” program. It might have sounded odd, but I meant it as the highest compliment. This program molds itself around its residents. It listens, adapts, and changes when needed. That kind of flexibility takes work. It takes humility. And it showed me that this is a place where people are not only allowed to evolve, they are encouraged to. The day I found out I matched here, I was over the moon. As someone excited about academic medicine, I couldn’t imagine a better place to begin. And of course, the strong sports culture was the cherry on top.
