A varied professional pedigree continues to influence Peter Landgren’s career. For over 40 years, he has inspired audiences, impacted students and fortified organizations as a symphony orchestra musician, soloist, teacher, dean, provost and foundation president.

Winning the third horn position in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) at age 21 –  the beginning of his senior year at CCM – Peter Landgren was promoted three years later to associate principal horn. His 29-year career with the BSO includes tours of the U.S., Mexico, Europe, Russia and Asia, encompassing the music director tenures of Sergiu Comissiona, David Zinman, Yuri Temirkanov and Marin Alsop. His recorded legacy includes 30 recordings with the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Cincinnati and Houston, and two solo recordings: Mozart Distilled, with the Atlantic String Quartet, and A Golden Horn, with pianist Ann Shein. Landgren’s commitment to developing the next generation of music professionals was fulfilled over 26 years as a faculty member of The Johns Hopkins University Peabody Conservatory. He also served on the faculties of the University of Maryland, College Park and the National Orchestral Institute.

Landgren’s desire to increase his impact on students was the impetus behind his career transition from performer and pedagogue to serving as an administrator for two-decades in five varied roles.

  • Interim Director, The Johns Hopkins University Peabody Institute, 2005 – 2006
  • Conservatory Director, Baldwin Wallace College, 2007 – 2011
  • Dean and Thomas James Kelly Professor of Music, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), 2011 – 2016

Working internationally while serving as Peabody’s interim director, Landgren successfully negotiated a collaborative agreement between The Johns Hopkins University Peabody Institute and the National University of Singapore Yong Siew Toh Conservatory. At Baldwin Wallace, he designed and fully-funded a renovation and expansion of the conservatory’s facilities and oversaw a curricular overhaul that incorporated entrepreneurism and advocacy into each conservatory major. Landgren’s tenure as CCM’s Dean saw a five-fold increase in fundraising, the creation of the CSO/CCM Diversity Fellowship – a partnership between the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and CCM – and hiring the internationally acclaimed Ariel Quartet as CCM string quartet-in-residence. Servant leadership brought Landgren to two other leadership roles for the university, first as Interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and ultimately serving for seven years as President of the University of Cincinnati Foundation / Vice President of University Advancement. Landgren’s bold vision leading the UC Foundation yielded a 60% annual fundraising increase over his tenure, culminating in the close of the Next/Now Campaign, raising $2.19 billion of philanthropic support for the University of Cincinnati and UC Health.
