Other Information
During the quarter I meet with my students in early morning help sessions. We meet several times a week to work on the most recent mathematics topics we have covered in class. I do not lecture, and in fact, I do not participate much. I serve as the conduit for knowledge that the students in attendance already possess. We start out by asking if anyone has questions on a particular topic and go from there. The students work problems at the board, all their work being very visible. When I find a mistake, I tell them so, and it is their job to find it. They may use all the resources at hand, including fellow students. If a student is totally lost, I find the student who is farthest ahead in the solution and send them to rescue the struggling cohort. It is an atmosphere that is infectious. It is a way to steal several hours a week from my students so that they can be in a setting where mathematics is being done and talked about freely. Just ask one of my students about it.,
