Personal Statement
Fear can be a potent motivator. What first pushed me toward medicine was the fear of complacency, of one day waking up and discovering I had become bored in my work. That unease pushed me to seek a specialty brimming with variety and complexity; one that will continually push me to think, adapt, and grow. I found my answer in Internal Medicine. I discovered this calling while caring for a patient with cirrhosis who arrived somnolent and unresponsive. The consensus was that he was nearing the end of life, and morale was low as conversations shifted toward withdrawing care. By insisting on a more careful workup, we discovered urosepsis as the true culprit and initiated antibiotics. Days later, he was alert and conversing with family, a moment his daughter thought she would never have again. That moment underscored what I value most about Internal Medicine: leaving no stone unturned to give each patient a fighting chance.
Why I Chose Cincinnati
UC stood out for its commitment to developing leaders in Medical Education and an innovative approach to continuous learning and improvement. The residents seemed at ease and genuinely supportive of one another during the interview and second look. What truly struck me was how well I connected with several other applicants to the program (many of whom matched to the program!!). These interactions left me confident that I would be joining a community where peers grow together and thrive throughout residency.
