Personal Statement
Even with a windowsill overflowing with bouquets and get-well-soon cards, there is an inherent sense of solitude within the confines of a hospital bed. I felt it acutely with Mr. X, my 64-year-old patient newly diagnosed with ALS. As he grieved his diagnosis, logistical and insurance battles prolonged his stay. While I couldn't alter the insurance appeals, I could offer comfort and reassurance to him and his family. I patiently answered their questions, swapped stories of our loved ones and hobbies, and kept Mr. X company through long, lonely days. One day, he earnestly took my hand and asked, "Will I ever walk again?" We both knew the answer. I stayed with him, hand in hand, as he absorbed the weight of that reality. We successfully discharged the day before his granddaughter's birthday, a little girl I felt I already knew through the many stories Mr. X and I shared. The relationship I developed with Mr. X became a lasting reminder that, amidst the uncertainty of medicine, it is a simple human connection that has the power to heal.

Why I Chose Cincinnati
Having gone to UC for medical school, I already had an up-close view of the care, respect, and knowledge UC physicians possessed. The residents truly value their work, and the joy of the art of medicine shines through even on tough days. They have rock-solid relationships they can lean on among peers and leadership alike. As a medical student, I felt my opinion was valued and my voice was heard, so I could only imagine the support and respect the residents felt. I knew I had to be a part of that.
