Professional Summary

Professor Nauman is the Dane A. and Mary Louise Miller Professor of Biomedical Engineering, University of Cincinnati and the director of the University of Cincinnati’s Human Injury Research and Regenerative Technologies (H.I.R.R.T.) Laboratory. From 2004 – 2022, he served as an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Mechanical Eng. Biomedical Engineering and BMS at Purdue University. From 2000 – 2004, he was the Assistant Prof. of Biomedical Engineering Tulane University.

He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Berkeley in 2000; his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Berkeley in 1998; his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Delaware.

The H.I.R.R.T. Lab’s mission is to explore the mechanisms that govern a variety of pathologies including traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury (SCI), musculoskeletal damage, atherosclerosis, and cancer metastasis. In addition, the lab strives to develop novel protective and reconstructive treatment methods. This work is a collaborative enterprise and the lab’s focus is upon improving the understanding of injury processes, and simultaneously developing treatment and delivery methods targeted directly to those damage mechanisms.

Prof. Nauman’s major accomplishments include: (1) developing an FDA-approved engineered tissue product that has been used in humans to repair tendon damage in the shoulder; (2) Co-authoring landmark contributions to the field of traumatic brain injury, and (3) Fourteen U.S. patents to date.

He also has received numerous honors, including the very rare distinction of being inducted into both Purdue Book of Great Teachers (2018), which is on permanent display in the Purdue Memorial Union, and Purdue Research Foundation’s Innovators Hall of Fame (2014). Other honors include:

  • 2023 University of Cincinnati College of Engineering: Professor of the Year – Chosen by the CEAS Tribunal
  • Purdue Teaching Academy – Award for Exceptional Teaching and Instructional Support During the COVID-19 Pandemic (In-Person Learning Environment) - 2021
  • University of Delaware Distinguished Career Award - 2016
  • Charles B. Murphy Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Award and induction into Purdue’s Teaching Academy - 2016
  • Bernie Flowers Award for Outstanding Contributions to Amateur Football – Awarded to the Purdue Neurotrauma Group (Larry Leverenz, Eric Nauman, and Tom Talavage)
  • Harry Solberg Award for the Best Teacher in Purdue’s School of Mechanical Engineering - 2015
