Professional Summary

Personal Statement
My own patients and their families in Internal Medicine have asked many of the same questions I had while acting as a caregiver. During a rotation with the gastroenterology consult service, I saw an older patient who was found to have an esophageal perforation after a nasogastric tube placement, just days after surgical resection of esophageal cancer. His eyes filled with tears as he expressed his frustration and grief. He had questions: "Is this type of thing normal?" "What's going to happen to me?" "Did I make a mistake consenting to surgery?" My patient needed help making sense of his situation and the events of his hospital stay so far. While we talked, I was able to comfort and validate him. Together, we began to process his fear and frustrations and consolidated them into a list of questions for his primary and other consulting teams. In this unfortunate situation, we forged an alliance. Even when things were hard, through our interaction he realized his doctors were here to help.

Why I Chose Cincinnati
Cincinnati stood out to me from early in my residency application process as I was looking for a program that would offer excellent training within a kind and supportive environment. Additionally, the emphasis on preparing physician educators is uniquely aligned with my long-term goals. With each interaction with the residents and faculty members in my interview and throughout the year, I was blown away by their friendliness and care. Finally, I participated in the Couple’s Match, and the support both my partner and I were shown in that complicated process by UC helped us feel confident that here, we will be seen and understood as whole people, not just as employees.
