Personal Statement
“Remember to pick the blueberries,” another mnemonic from my piano instructor filled my mind. It had been several years since I had touched those yellowed keys. Memories flooded my consciousness from my former life as a pianist at CCM’s Preparatory Department. During my third year of medical school, I felt determined to teach my mentee in the Big Brother Program how to play piano. I wanted to share the gift of music that I deemed a curse in my earlier years. My piano teacher continuously stressed that medicine and the piano were harmonious since she had aspired to be a physician or a musician and saw the similarities between the two callings. Both concentrations require incredible focus, ambition, and provide healing. Like selecting internal medicine, other medical areas have their individual characteristics. However, the specific qualities of listening, research, and continuous learning strike a special chord with me. My desire to understand the musical theory of the piano not only translates to my aspiration toward gaining a greater understanding of medical science, but to find a harmonic balance between practice and mastery of clinical concepts combined with communication and relationship building.

Why I Chose Cincinnati
I chose the University of Cincinnati due to its emphasis on serving the local community through patient-centered care and rigorous academic training. During my interview at UC, I witnessed a sense of community among the residents and faculty that was not present during my interviews at other programs. Furthermore, I admired Dr. Warm’s leadership and emphasis on innovation in medical education. I am excited to be a part of a program that emphasizes this personalized approach to patient care and supports residents on their journey of life-long learning.
