Professional Summary
My research explores the relationship between language and literacy development among children in the process of acquiring two languages. Broadly, I ask: How can we differentiate difficulties with language and reading that stem from an underlying disorder versus those that stem from emerging bilingualism? An important part of this work is the validation of measures that can identify typical versus atypical language development in bilinguals.
Given the compounded risk factors that many bilingual children in the U.S. face (divided exposure to English, sometimes low SES, sometimes low parental education), early accurate assessment is key. However, we lack valid assessments for bilinguals that screen for skills that underlie both language and reading disorders.
