Professional Summary

~~Saundra (Soni) Regan, PhD, MGS is an Adjunct Assistant Professor and Director of the Research Division in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Cincinnati where she has worked since 1992. She holds a Masters degree in Gerontological Studies (MGS) from Miami University and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cincinnati. Her research interests are as varied as the problems seen by primary care providers who care for the most vulnerable and underserved patients in underresourced urban and rural areas. Her research is in chronic disease in adults primarily hypertension and diabetes, social determinants of health and health equity of transgender persons, persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, persons experiencing homelessness and care of older adults. She has been involved in using innovative methods such as virtual reality to teach and evaluate the care of persons who have experienced inequitable health care. Dr Regan is heavily involved in quality improvement and program evaluation using qualitative methodology. She is also dedicated to training medical students, residents, fellows and faculty in conducting primary care research and obtaining grant funding for their projects. Her methodological expertise is in qualitative research and program evaluation. She is a member of the Community Engagement Committee of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training. Dr. Regan’s current projects include a project funded by Ohio Department of Medicaid's Medicaid Technical Assistance & Policy Program (MedTAPP).evaluating the development and implementation of two virtual reality simulations educating medical providers about the social determinants of health which were converted to online simulations during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has now co-developed three additional online experiences with a team of academic and community providers and persons with lived experience to train providers working with Medicaid patients about the social determinants of health and the care for patients who have historically not received equitable care such as transgender patients, the homeless patient with mental illness and persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities transitioning from pediatric specialty care to primary adult care. She is a co-investigator and evaluator on an additional MedTAPP project educating providers about cardiovascular and diabetes best practices, and two HRSA grants evaluating fellowships in caring for persons with substance use disorders provided by a team of professionals in psychiatric nursing, mental health counseling, and social work. She recently completed a NIDA funded project looking at on online program for patients with chronic pain taking opiates. She is also a co-investigator and evaluator on an AHRQ funded grant training primary care teams about quality improvement of patients with hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases and the development of a Medicaid funded regional Quality Improvement HUB, teaching primary care providers about improving quality care given to patients with hypertension and diabetes. She also assists faculty in writing grants to fund their projects as well as her own research and continues to present and publish.
