Gregory W. Rouan, MD, FACP, is the Gordon and Helen Huges Taylor Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine since June, 2011.  Previously he was the Richard and Sue Vilter Professor of Clinical Medicine and served as Associate Chair for Educational Affairs in the Department of Medicine and Vice-Dean for Extramural Affairs in the College of Medicine.  He previously directed the internal medicine residencies and at the University of Cincinnati and has been recognized as a clinician-educator, clinician-scholar, and clinician-leader in graduate medical education (GME) since 1987. 
 
Dr. Rouan received his B.S. degree from the University of Dayton in 1976 and graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1980.  He completed his internship and residency at the University of Cincinnati where he also served as chief medical resident.  As an American College of Physicians Teaching and Research Scholar, he completed a Kellogg fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology at the Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
 
 

Clinician-educator

Dr Rouan is a dedicated and talented educator who has been recognized by medical students, residents, and his colleagues for teaching excellence.  He was chosen as Teacher of the Year (awarded only once per faculty recipient) by the residents and has received the Silver Apple Clinical Teaching award given by the graduating medical school class upon four occasions.  Furthermore, Dr. Rouan’s teaching excellence was recently recognized by the American College of Physicians with the prestigious Master Teacher Award.
 
He is universally viewed as an advocate for all house staff.  Dr Rouan is also is involved in policy-making at the state and national level as described below.
 
 

Clinician-scholar

Dr. Rouan is very active nationally with the Society for General Internal Medicine (SGIM), the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) and the American College of Physicians (ACP).  He has chaired and served on many standing and program committees, abstract and workshop selection committees, the SGIM national council and as Midwest regional president of SGIM.  He has served on a variety of committees in APDIM to include the nominating committee for national officers.  He has led and been involved with a number of symposia and workshops for both APDIM and SGIM.  These included faculty development, outpatient teaching, curriculum development and other innovative issues such as recognizing and rewarding faculty teaching effort.  He has chaired a variety of ACP regional and national committees and served as treasurer for the Ohio Chapter of the ACP and its Governor from 2011-2015.  He has been a fellow of the American College since 1988.
 

He has published over 30 articles in peer review journals and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, the Annals of Internal Medicine, the American Journal of Medicine, Academic Medicine and the Journal for General Internal Medicine (JGIM).  He was an associate editor for the Journal Advanced Studies in Clinical Medicine and serves as the clinical vignette column editor. 

He had led the GME programs at UC through innumerable innovative curricular change.  Under his guidance, the residency programs have been recognized by the accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) with three consecutive 5-year accreditations.  A single 5-year cycle accreditation is a distinction only attained by the top 20% of programs nationally (most recently in 2003).  He is most proud of our superb faculty associate program director
