Professional Summary
Shelby Schaffer is an Assistant Professor of Cooperative Education in the Fashion Design program at the University of Cincinnati, serving students in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP). A proud DAAP alum, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design in 2017 and later completed her Master of Design (MDes) degree at UC, where her research focused on circular design education and how to better prepare students to design with "no waste" mindsets.
Before transitioning into academia, Shelby worked for several years as an apparel designer, most notably in the women’s denim and casual bottoms space for a major retailer in Dallas, TX. While there, she initiated a collaboration with the Blue Jeans Go Green™ program, integrating denim recycling into the company’s design process to reduce textile waste. Her professional background spans a range of markets—including children’s outerwear and swimwear, men’s activewear, and women’s contemporary ready-to-wear—at both emerging start-ups and large global corporations.
Now well into her co-op faculty role, Shelby brings her industry knowledge, research background, and mentorship mindset to support over 183 fashion design students in their co-op journeys. She is passionate about helping students navigate the fashion industry with purpose, confidence, and curiosity—encouraging them to craft experiences that align with their personal and professional goals. Shelby remains deeply committed to developing student skillsets and professional development through the same co-op program that helped shape her.
