Matthew Schatt , PhD

A creative, engaging and well-respected educator with nearly two decades of experience teaching music to students of diverse ages, Matthew D. Schatt has mentored students throughout the state of Ohio, most recently in the Cleveland area. In addition to his exceptional work in K-12 schools, Schatt has worked closely with online graduate programs at the University of Florida and Kent State University since their inception. Schatt’s experiences have included guiding instrumental music students in the fifth through twelfth grades, as well as modernizing and facilitating general music classes at the middle and secondary levels. An Ohio native, Schatt received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Bowling Green State University, a Master of Music degree from CCM with a specialization in Trumpet and a Ph.D. in Music Education from Case Western Reserve University.

An avid and curious researcher, Schatt’s active research interests include studying the practice routines of instrumental musicians, examining the motivational interests of pre-adolescent musicians and exploring student-centered models for secondary instruction. Schatt’s insights have been disseminated in Psychology of Music, International Journal of Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, Visions of Research in Music Education, Research & Issues in Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education and Contributions to Music Education. In 2020, Schatt completed his second term on the editorial board for the Ohio Music Education Association’s refereed journal Contributions to Music Education, is currently serving on the reviewing committees of the International Journal of Contemporary Education and Psychological and Behavioral Sciences and is a frequent guest reviewer for Psychology of Music.
