Bachelor of Science, cum laude: Miami University Oxford, OH, 05-15-1977 (Speech and Hearing Therapy)

Research and Practice Interests

Mrs. Schmidlin’s research interests focus on clinical research that uses ultrasound as visual biofeedback during articulation therapy for /r/ and other sounds that are difficult to treat, such as /l/ and lateralized /s/.  She is the Principal Investigator for an ongoing study that was originally approved by the Institutional Review Board in March, 2009.  The therapy sessions for this study are conducted at the U.C. Speech and Language Clinic, where Mrs. Schmidlin is a clinical supervisor.  Graduate student clinicians assist with the therapy, under Mrs. Schmidlin’s direct supervision.

Here is a brief description of the therapy:

With the use of ultrasound, the client is able to see an image of the movements of all parts of his/her tongue on the ultrasound monitor.  As the client watches the monitor, the clinician explains what is being shown in the tongue movements.  By using this visual feedback, the clinician helps the client to become aware of which tongue movements result in acceptable /r/ production for his unique oral structure and anatomy. The clinician directs the client to focus on the movements of precise areas of his tongue that are most critical for the correct production of the speech sound.

The results of this study have shown that, over time, the use of ultrasound as visual biofeedback is effective in treating articulation errors for clients who had made little to no progress with traditional therapy procedures.
