Professional Summary
Rachel A. Sebastian is a researcher at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Child Policy Research Center and doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cincinnati. Her research focuses on inequality, child well-being, and child and family policy. Currently, she serves as an evaluator for a CHIPRA Quality Improvement Demonstration Grant in Colorado and New Mexico that seeks to improve screening services provided at school-based health centers and is conducting the 2011 Greater Cincinnati Child Well-Being Survey – a survey of primary caregivers used by local policy makers and researchers to assess the well-being and need of children in the region previously conducted in 2000 and 2005. Her dissertation involves a quantitative analysis of Lareau’s class-based parenting typologies using data from the National Household Education Surveys. Past research has included examining the experiences of homeless women and children in shelters, child care quality and evaluation systems, gender differences in sleep disruption, the effects of work schedules on marital satisfaction, and the racial composition of workgroups and ratings of job satisfaction, with recent publications appearing in Gender & Society and the American Sociological Review. She also teaches courses on race, class, and gender at Northern Kentucky University and the University of Cincinnati and represents Cincinnati Children’s Hospital on the Northern Kentucky Data Advisory Committee, a group providing guidance on the collection and use of child health and well-being data and measures.
