Professional Summary

Professor Tara Smith has been on the faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cincinnati since 1991.  Her primary area of research interest is abstract algebra; additionally she is interested in the mathematical preparation of teachers.  

Professor Smith has served as the Graduate Program Director and Undergraduate Program Director in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.  She has a long-standing involvement with College Board's AP Calculus program, in both test development and scoring roles.   

Professor Smith is currently serving as a Program Director in the Algebra and Number Theory Program in the Division of Mathematical Sciences at the National Science Foundation.

Research and Practice Interests

Areas of research interest include the algebraic theory of quadratic forms, division algebras, Galois groups, valuations and ordered fields, and the mathematical preparation of teachers.
