Personal Statement
As my grandmother’s routine changed from daily mass to daily doctor appointments, I saw how the connection she and her children had with her physicians allowed her to go forth with peace and dignity. Ultimately, my grandmother chose to go home with hospice, so that her nine children could surround her bed as she took her final breath. Knowing how much my grandmother cherished her children and grandchildren, this priority easily surpassed needing to receive any further treatments. She had accepted that it was her time. Watching this process unfold further deepened my passion and appreciation for the field of internal medicine. Even today as I walk through the halls of my home institution’s ICU, I know that the practice of medicine comes down to so much more than lines, procedures, assessments and plans—it’s about the connection.

Why I Chose Cincinnati
Along the interview trail I felt like a lot of programs touted “patient-centered care” but didn’t have intentional structures in place to ensure that would happen. I really appreciate how University of Cincinnati emphasizes bedside rounding so that patients can be involved in every step of their care. Giving patients autonomy over their health builds trust and understanding as patients learn to navigate new (and sometimes scary) diagnoses. Beyond that, Cincy showed a dedication to its residents through evidence-based-learning techniques and embracing a growth mindset. Every person I met, from the pre-interview zoom social to the end of the interview day, was incredibly welcoming and happy to share in the joy they had found within the program. For those reasons, and so many others, I knew this place had to be at the top of my list! I look forward to learning at a program that I know will challenge me to become my best self while keeping patients at the forefront of each day.
