Research and Practice Interests

I study subsurface fluid flow and mass transport processes. My research focuses on advancing fundamental understanding of flow (single and multiple fluids) and solute (conservative and reactive) transport through heterogeneous geological (porous) media. I develop theory and perform numerical simulations to clarify fundamental aspects of flow and transport. A few examples of my research include contaminant fate and transport in groundwater flow systems, characterizing cm to km scale physical and chemical heterogeneity, upscaling reactive transport parameters, numerical simulation of reactive transport (e.g., plume retardation and macrodispersion, and bioremediation), and ecohydrology (e.g., quantifying and modeling processes associated with groundwater and surface-water exchange of heat and nutrients in streambed sediments). I have done extensive research in multiphase multicomponent compositional flow in heterogeneous porous media (e.g., carbon dioxide geological sequestration, gravitational and viscous flow instabilities, and enhanced oil recovery via gas injection).
