Professional Summary

DR. EUGENE SOMOZA is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences at the University of Cincinnati and is also associated with the Cincinnati VA Medical Center. He has been the director of the Cincinnati Addiction Research Center (CinARC) since its founding in 1995, and the principal investigator of the Ohio Valley Node (OVN) of NIDA’s Clinical Trials Network since the OVN became part of the network in 2000. Dr. Somoza started his career in psychiatry as director of the psychiatric emergency room for seven years at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center, after which he directed the Cincinnati VA’s substance abuse program, including the methadone program, for five years. Currently, he devotes his efforts exclusively to research.

With a Ph.D. in physics in addition to an M.D., Dr. Somoza has a strong interest in the development of mathematical models in psychiatry and other areas of medicine. He has twenty six publications on the optimization of diagnostic tests using (a) the statistical techniques of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis combined with information theory and (b) artificial neural networks as “diagnostic consultants” for medicine and psychiatry. He also has experience in both basic science research (with nineteen publications in neurochemistry), and clinical research in substance abuse (as the principal investigator or investigator in over thirty clinical trials, with eighteen publications). A current special interest of Dr. Somoza’s is the selection and evaluation of outcome measures to be used in clinical trials on cocaine abuse.

Dr. Somoza serves on the Editorial Board as Research and Statistical Consultant for Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, and on the Editorial Panel of Journal of Addiction Medicine.

He is a member of the Regional Leadership Committee of the Advisory Board, Great Lakes Addictions Technology Transfer Center (GLATTC).  He is also on the Board of Directors for the Ohio Citizen Advocates.
