Professional Summary

Personal Statement
I remember hearing my resident on the phone “She tested positive, you have to come to the ED and get tested.” Not only would I have to go to the ED; I was not allowed inside the ED. This was a disease that the hospital knew nothing about, something the whole city of Detroit, the whole country, had never truly encountered before. This was before they were taking temperatures at every hospital door. Before social distancing became a part of everyday vocabulary. Before anyone even knew how the Coronavirus spread. After being tested by people in hazmat suits in the Detroit Receiving Emergency parking lot, I had to quarantine myself in my apartment while awaiting the test results. This gave me time to think about the sacrifice required to practice medicine. A physician needs to give up so much of themselves, their time, their energy, and sometimes, even their health, for the sake of their patients. I was fortunate enough to test negative, but this experience really made me reflect on why I love medicine. The teamwork that medicine emphasizes is such a crucial component of patient care, and I enjoy brainstorming with my team and collaborating with other teams to generate a plan for each patient. Additionally, medicine offers the opportunity to learn something new every day.  Ultimately, I see myself advocate for my patients, and work to be as compassionate, empathetic, and approachable as possible. I feel that, even as a medical student, I have been given an enormous responsibility to care for my patients in more than just a physical aspect. To me, caring for patients is more than just checking your patients before rounds and making sure they are still breathing; it’s rechecking, making sure they are as comfortable and informed as possible. I make sure to see things from the patient’s perspective, especially if they’re feeling anxious and confused about their disease and their care. I believe that the patient is a person, not an answer on a multiple choice test, and they deserve to be taken care of by people who truly care for their wellbeing.

Why I Chose Cincinnati
I chose the University of Cincinnati program because it really feels like the place that I will truly be able to thrive as a physician. It provides an incredible learning environment with amazing people who will support me and challenge me as a resident. I was especially drawn by the program’s dedication to continued innovation and improvement in patient care as well as its emphasis on the humanism of medicine.
