Professional Summary
Tyler Swingle holds an Assistant Professor position at the University of Cincinnati School of Architecture and Interior Design and is the Director of MATCOM lab. He received his Bachelor of Environmental Design degree from Montana State University in 2012 and his Masters of Architecture degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology's School of Architecture + Planning in 2018. During this time, Tyler won several prizes, including the AIA Henry Adams Medal in 2018 and the Sydney B. Karofsky '37 Prize in 2016. Tyler has worked at Barkow-Leibinger Architects and Matter Design, and has a wide range of project experience including awards, winning competitions, material research prototypes and built works. Simultaneously, Tyler lectured at the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture at McGill University, held the Visiting Scholar position at Montana State University School of Architecture and Emerging Scholar in Design at the University of Texas at Austin.
Tyler's background in research driven design compliments a balance between design practice and research lab. He is interested in the variety of tools that architects use, including material assemblies and computation software. His work focuses on the productive misuse of these architectural tools to undo biases and explore new architectural possibilities as teaching strategies, research methods and design innovation.
Currently his work focuses on reclaimed cross laminated timber (CLT) members for new hybrid assemblies and waste integration strategies for performative brick construction. Both projects offer a trans-scalar approach to material use and design strategies, while engaging scientific metrics of material properties and performance.
