John M. Tew , MD

John M. Tew, Jr., M.D., is a neurosurgeon with the Mayfield Clinic, Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Cincinnati, and Clinical Director of the UC Neuroscience Institute. Before taking over the helm of the Institute, Dr. Tew served as Chairman of UC’s Department of Neurosurgery for 20 years. He is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.
 
Dr. Tew earned his medical degree from Wake Forest University, performed his neurosurgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital, and was awarded a fellowship at the University of Zurich. He joined Cincinnati’s Mayfield Clinic in 1969. Long recognized internationally as a pioneer in the treatment of brain tumors and the adoption of lasers in neurosurgery, he has served as President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the Academy of Neurological Surgeons.

During his career Dr. Tew:

• further developed the science of microsurgery to treat disorders of the nervous system
• developed the Tew Curved Electrode for minimally invasive percutaneous radiofrequency treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (facial pain)
• was the first in Cincinnati to apply lasers in neurosurgery
• led the team that brought radiosurgery to Cincinnati for the treatment of brain tumors and vascular malformations
• led the team that developed endovascular treatment of brain malformations and aneurysms
• led the team that brought intraoperative MRI to Cincinnati, the first installation in North America
• Wrote the Atlas of Operative Microneurosurgery, Volume 1 (Aneurysms & AVM’s) & Volume 2 (Brain Tumors)

Clinical expertise -- brain tumors, spinal cord tumors, acoustic neuromas, pituitary tumors, shingles, trigeminal neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, percutaneous stereotactic rhizotomy (PSR), microvascular decompression (MVD), hemifacial spasm, and Chiari malformations.

Research interests include surgical removal of acoustic neuromas, dural sealants to reduce CSF leak, and technology advancements in image-guided surgery and laser surgery (CO2, Neodynium YAG).
