Professional Summary
Menelaos Triantafillou is Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Planning. He became a full-time faculty in 2001 after 30 years of professional practice in planning and urban design. He is the principal of Menelaos Triantafillou and Associates, a planning consultancy specializing in public and private planning and design projects, and he often provides expert testimony in land use and zoning litigation cases. Professor Triantafillou has prepared numerous comprehensive plans; urban design plans, zoning codes, streetscape improvements, and landscape analysis of environmentally sensitive areas. His main mission is to integrate the practice of planning within the academic environment at the undergraduate and graduate programs, to expand teaching, and to help advance instruction and the students' awareness by engaging them in real world projects. Professor Triantafillou teaches studios and seminars in the areas of urban design and physical planning, specializing in urban redevelopment, historic preservation, mixed use developments and place making, visual landscape analysis, and environmental resources analysis. Areas of research include emerging trends in retail developments and their contribution to revitalization and redevelopment, contemporary urbanism and urban design, the pedagogy of place in urban design, urbanization in China, and visual landscape analysis. In 2006, he received the Fulbright Scholars Award for teaching and research and he visited the School of Architecture and Urbanism at the Technical University of Cluj, Romania. As a principal investigator he recently managed a group of students and conducted an urban design studio for the preparation of the Eastern Anyang New Town Conceptual Plan in China. Professor Triantafillou holds a Master of Landscape Architecture form Harvard University, the Bachelor of Urban Planning from the University of Cincinnati, and he has studied Law at the National University of Athens, Greece, prior to immigrating to the US. Professor Triantafillou is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the International Society of City and regional Planners, and the Hellenic Association of Landscape Architects.
