Personal Statement
“Knowledge has entertained me and it has shaped me and it has failed me. Something in me still starves.” This quote from the poet Mary Oliver has resonated with me and encouraged me to approach each learning opportunity with eagerness and genuine curiosity about the intricacies of human health. This principle was best exemplified during my internal medicine clerkship, my first clinical rotation. However, internal medicine cannot survive with a static knowledge base that answers a finite number of questions. I recognize my responsibilities to both treat patients and advance my field through research as a tool to guide and improve patient care. My research in social determinants of health has illuminated how a host of factors can influence a patient’s outcome. Though my work focused on cancer patients, this knowledge allowed me to better understand my own patients’ circumstances, irrespective of their condition. I am motivated to uncover interventions that address medical inequities, improve outcomes, and enhance quality of life. I plan to dedicate myself toward research in these areas as a central part of my journey to effect positive change in medicine.

Why I Chose Cincinnati
My first thought after my Cincinnati interview was, “We’re speaking the same language.” And all I could think about was how much Dr. Cook, Dr. Mehta, and Dr. Warm had thoroughly read my application and turned the interview into conversations about my career interests, hobbies, and person. I knew that if this was the investment in me as an applicant, the investment in me as a resident would be even more personalized and focus on my growth as a clinician, learner, and human. Cincinnati’s emphasis on clinical excellence and medical education strongly aligns with my career goals, and what excites me most about this next step is that learning and growth will be priorities every single day of my residency. I’m super excited to be joining the Cincinnati family!
