- Treasurer, Medical Student Union. Stritch School of Medicine, 2007-2008 -- Constructed the annual budget, gave monthly reports at meetings, approved organization requests, and provided reimbursements.,

- Vice-president, Pediatrics Club, Stritch School of Medicine, 2007-2008 -- Fostered interest in Pediatric Medicine by coordinating student mentorship opportunities, community service programs, workshops, forums, and speakers. Organized the STEPS program volunteers who provided scholastic assistance and tutoring to the pediatric inpatient population.,

- Board Member, Special Friends, Stritch School of Medicine, 2007-2008 -- Selected volunteers and organized events throughout the year for Special Friends, a program that matches medical students as mentors with pediatric hematology/oncology patients and their siblings.,

Professional Affiliation

2008 -2010: Research Assistant at Loyola University Medical Center, Department of Surgery (Margo Shoup, MD, FACS) -- Actively participated in a retrospective research endeavor that is investigating the outcome of patients with rectal cancer who were staged at T3 and treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy. Worked with surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and pathologists on this project. Evaluated postoperative patients who met these criteria within the past ten years.

2005 -2006: Research Assistant at Boston College, Department of Biology (Laboratory of Clare O'Connor, PhD) -- For my senior honors research project, I investigated the role of the enzyme Thioredoxin peroxidase in oxidative stress resistance in the organism Schizosaccharomyces pombe by constructing knock-out strains of the yeast and stressing them with a variety of oxidizing agents to determine if the absence of the Thioredoxin peroxidase gene resulted in decreased cell viability.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES

 

Proviso East High School Health Fair Co-Organizer, 2007, 2008 – Organized health fair booths, coordinated medical student volunteers, and volunteered at yearly event.

 

Special Friends, Volunteer and Board Member, 2006-2008 -- Acted as a "Big Special Friend" to a pediatric hematology/oncology patient ("Little Special Friend"). In addition, selected the medical student volunteer participants and organized events.

 

International Service Immersion Trip, Honduras, 2007 -- Organized, fundraised, and completed a service trip to El Progresso, Honduras with six other medical students. Assisted attending physicians and the local Catholic parish in setting up medical clinics to provide aid to community members.

 

Community Health Volunteer, 2006, 2008 -- As a medical student volunteer, participated in the Loyola-run free clinic in Chicago, conducting histories and physicals and providing primary care and ENT-specific exams to the underserved.

 

Camp Goodtimes, American Cancer Society, Seattle Chapter, 2002-2007 -- Volunteered one week every summer as a camp counselor for pediatric cancer patients and their siblings at an overnight camp; co-counselor of a cabin of ten girls ranging in age from nine-to-twelve years old.

 

International Service Learning Trip, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, 2005 -- As a premedical student, spent three weeks in San Jose, Costa Rica and El Castillo, Nicaragua, setting up and volunteering in health clinics for the indigent people of the area as well as participating in home visits.
