Professional Summary

Kate York, PhD, RN, FNP is the Director of Global Health Nursing and Assistant Professor of Clinical Nursing in the College of Nursing. She works in the global community health and primary health care setting and teaches community/public health nursing along with global health. Dr. York works to create academic partnerships with schools and colleges of nursing at higher education institutions abroad and sustains these relationships through mutually beneficial activities. She was a Fellow in Global Clinical Education through Massachusetts General Hospital while teaching nursing students at Hubert Kairuki Memorial University in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania as part of the Global Health Service Partnership between Seed Global Health, U.S. Peace Corps, and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Her interest in global health developed during her doctoral studies when she studied factors affecting participation in a community-directed medication distribution program for onchocerciasis and the role of Community Health Workers in Morogoro Rural District of Tanzania. These experiences shaped her philosophy of global collaboration for nursing students – one that requires interaction with student nurses and nurses in host countries in a meaningful and sustainable way. Dr. York is also Senior Advisor, Education and Clinical Practice at Seed Global Health, an NGO focused on strengthening health systems through education and clinical training of the next generation of health care providers in sub-Saharan Africa. In this role she recruits and supports specialized nurse educators in academic partner institutions in Malawi and Uganda.
